Black Ink on White Paper

Black ink on White Paper is a poster exhibition showcasing work from across twenty years of my life as a graphic design student, professional, and educator. The title is a term I have adapted from the standard industry phrase, “single-color printing.” Many of my projects have had budget constraints that require designs to be done in black-and-white. This limitation has shaped my approach by forcing an emphasis on composition without the benefit of color to differentiate elements.

I believe that graphic design is not “art” in the classic sense of the word. But, like art, it requires a high level of creative skill and ability. Good design adds value to otherwise humble materials and production methods. This exhibition reflects that mindset. The work is practical, direct, and shaped by real-world constraints like budget. Each poster is printed using a large-format plotter, a low-cost production method typically used for engineering outputs like blueprints and electrical diagrams.

Black Ink on White Paper features design work for traditional media like books and promotional ephemera, alongside explorations into creative coding and motion graphics.

This represents a shift away from printed matter to screen-based design. These newer pieces reflect how my practice is evolving in response to the increasingly digital landscape of contemporary graphic design.
